Being an Artist and Not Giving an F-word Who Knows It

I posted this on my personal FaceBook the other day (so this may be a repeat for some of you) but I got to thinking about how the information found in this article was really beneficial to artists and decided to blog about it too.

I think it's important for artists to ask themselves why they make art and who they make it for. If the answer is anything less than themselves, I think that the artist will eventually rebel against what they're doing and at the very least need a separate outlet for personal expression. This is my experience anyway.

The other question to ask is "Am I editing myself in my work?". If the answer to that question is yes, I believe another rebellion is inevitable. In order to satisfy the inner artist, you need to express yourself without being apologetic about who you are. I'm going to write that on my walls.

"You know when they say “the best revenge is a life well lived”? Well, this is true, but it isn’t the whole truth. A life well lived is great, yes, but it cannot happen while you are sweating about who your detractors are and what they think. What you have to do, what you have no choice but to do, is accept it and move on."

To sum up: Learn not to give a fuck, accept that not everyone will like you or your work, and move on. Keep making what your soul tells you to make and the rest will (hopefully) work itself into place. And read the whole article. It's seriously good stuff.
